An acute fuel shortage has hit the Greater Accra Region. Long queues could be seen at most of the filling stations in Accra. The situation has created a lot of public apprehension with motorists resorting to panic buying. The story is however different in the Regions as there have been no reports of such shortage outside the Greater Accra Region.
In an interview with JOY FM, the Chief Executive of the Tema Oil Refinery, Dr Yaw Donkor explained that the incidence is the result of the short supply of fuel over the weekend. According to him, one of the country’s suppliers of fuel who was expected to deliver multiple consignments to the refinery last week could, failed to do so on schedule.
The Chief Executive said the refinery was, as a result compelled to resort to supply rationing over the weekend, hence the shortage. Dr Donkor however noted that enough consignments are being supplied to oil marketing companies for the situation to return to normal by the close of Monday.
Dr Donkor dispelled rumours of an impending shortage saying that currently the refinery has a stock of fuel, which will last the country for two weeks. A second consignment, which will last the country another two weeks has just arrived at the Tema Port awaiting clearance.
