ActionAid helps women to understand rights

ActionAid Ghana in collaboration with the Northern Sector Action on Awareness Center (NORSAAC) has organised a workshop for women to educate them on sexual harassment and Women’s Rights at the workplace.

The two-day workshop, which ends at Tamale on Tuesday, brought together employees and employers from the informal sector such as members of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA), Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association, Smock Weavers and Beadmakers Associations.

The workshop formed part of a three-year project dubbed: “Young Urban Women Life Choices and Livelihood,” being implemented by ActionAid Ghana and NORSAAC, and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to ensure decent working environment for women in the informal sectors of employment in urban areas.

Mrs. Henrietta Lamptey, Project Manager of ActionAid Ghana, said evidence abound that young women involved in trading and working as house-helps were being denied appropriate remuneration by their employers.

Mrs. Lampety said the project, therefore, sought to advocate measures to address such violations and guarantee young women decent work.

She called on all stakeholders to eliminate such negative practices and ensure respect for women’s rights to decent work.

Madam Muniratu Rufai, Acting Northern Regional Chairperson of the GNTDA, described the workshop as timely as it enlightened participants on their rights and how to access them.

She said this would ensure that both employers and employees played their roles effectively and honoured their responsibilities to promote decent work for young urban women.
