Accra, Nov. 20, GNA – The Achimota Lorry Terminal in Accra would be inaugurated in December for public use.
The project would ease the heavy vehicular traffic on a portion of the Achimota dual carriage way, which has been turned into a lorry park. Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive made this known to the Ghana News Agency in an interview.
The 1.2 million Ghana- Cedi terminal, has a parking capacity for 800 vehicles, 20 unit toilet facility, 10 canteens, a police post, a clinic, an electronic destination board, waiting sheds for commuters, offices for the local drivers unions and a close circuit television to track illegal activities.
Dr. Vanderpuije who inspected the terminal expressed satisfaction with the project.
He also inspected projects at Ga Mashie (James Town), to familiarize himself with projects being sponsored by the sister city of Amsterdam.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly would sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the extension of the project in Amsterdam next week. He also visited the 19 cluster of schools at Ayalolo.
The schools have been taken over by criminals, whilst Muslim worshippers compete with the pupils over the verandas for prayers whilst academic work was in session.
Dr Vanderpuije met the leadership of the mosque and entreated them to stop the practice.
He also gave the assurance that the school would be fenced and renovated.
Dr. Vanderpuije also inspected works on the walkway and the U-drain at the Guggisberg Avenue and the drainage works along Bambosa Street, which forms part of the 8.3 million Euro project expected to end the perennial flooding, improve sanitation and open up the community for business development.
The project when completed would link old and new Dansoman. He bemoaned the poor sanitation situation in the metropolis especially lack of public places of convenience and announced the construction of 50 public toilets in addition to the public sewage connections to arrest the situation.
He noted that pan latrines would be abolished next year and implored landlords to provide toilet facilities in their homes. He said the demolition exercise in the metropolis would continue, adding that about 100 structures on water ways would be affected by the exercise at Chemuana to Sakaman.
Dr. Vanderpuije asked people who have received compensation for the demolition of their structures to vacate to pave way for the construction works. He called for the regularisation of all construction works, which must be covered by building permits to avoid demolition. He said people who have encroached on lands earmarked for schools, roads and other national projects would not be ejected. 20 Nov. 09
