Accra Women Demonstrate Against Serial Killings

Angry Ghanaian women, led by female lecturers from the University of Ghana, Legon, Friday marched through some main streets of Accra to express their disappointment over the string of bizarre killing of women within the capital.

They marched from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, nerve centre of the city, to the Castle, seat of the president, to express their disappointment at the inability of the police to the president.

They screamed: “We want the president, we want the president, we want the president” and later moved away to continue with their march.

The women wore mourning clothes and red arm bands, sang dirges and waved placards some of which read: “IGP Action Now”, “Violence against women is a crime” ,”God will avenge the death of the 30 women”, “IGP resign now.”

Nana Ato Dadzie, chief of staff at the presidency, met the leadership of the group and repeated government’s deep concern over the killings, saying government viewed the killings with revulsion.

“But solution to the killings could be quickened if people assist the police with information,” he added. “These obscene acts are being perpetrated by people who live among us. They have neighbours. They come and go under the eyes of the communities in which they live. Someone must have relevant and specific information that can help the police.”
