Accra-Tema Raliway Shuttle To Start Soon

Railway shuttle is expected to commence from Accra to Tema by the third quarter of the year, following the completion of construction work on a bridge near Baatsona.

The revival of the Accra-Tema shuttle is part of the Government?s promise to make the ailing railway sector vibrant again as well as ease the huge vehicular traffic congestion in the city.

Presently, engineers and workers of the Ghana Railway Company (GRC) are working on the rehabilitation of the rail line from Abelemkpe to Tema at the cost of $5.5 million.

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has provided $5 million for the project, while the Government of Ghana has released $500,000 as counterpart funding.

On his part, the special assistant to the minister for harbours and railways, Mr Ahmed Ayuba, said the project involved the rehabilitation of the railway stations at Asopotsoona and Tema.

He explained that the project had stalled briefly because of certain technical hitches, adding with work on the bridge completed and the materials for the rehabilitation and replacement of tracks having arrived, there was no cause for alarm, adding that ?it is the determination of the ministry to ensure that the project is completed on time.?
