Accra schools miss out in top ten BECE assessment

Junior High Schools in deprived and under-resourced districts across the country dominated the 2015 top ten best performing districts in the Basic Education and Certificate Education.

The deputy minister of Education Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who made the revelation during a public lecture on education decentralization organized by the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition stated that the assessment by the Education Ministry is a clear indication that the perception that schools in the deprived areas perform poorly is completely false.

The Greater Accra region is mostly considered as the most resourced region in terms of education facilities and also the region with some of the top schools in the country.

But according to the assessment by the Education Ministry, the best performing district was the Sefwi Akontombra district in the Western region followed by the Obuasi Municipal, Nkoranza North, Adansi North, Amansie West and Senchi Dwabuso districts.

All the districts with the best performing schools are considered as under-resourced and deprived.

The only district in the Greater Accra region that came close, according Mr. Ablakwa, is the GA West district which placed 12 in the assessment list.

Mr. Ablakwa in his address said “so this tells us something that we need to pay critical attention to certain notions and the claim that deprived districts because of lack of amenities and lack of the ability to attract trained teachers will certainly lag behind.”
