Mayor of Accra Michael Kpakpo Allotey has inspected completed repair and paving works on part of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue in the city’s Central Business District (CBD).
The works cover the U-turn area at Lava and the section running from the Derby Avenue/Kwame Nkrumah Avenue intersection to the Selwyn Market Street/Kwame Nkrumah Avenue intersection.
The rehabilitation was carried out after severe abrasions and potholes developed along the busy route. The damaged surface had been slowing traffic and increasing potential risks for pedestrians and other road users.
Following the inspection, Mr Allotey said the project would support efforts to improve road safety, reduce congestion and make movement through the commercial centre easier. He also expressed satisfaction with the completed work.
The Mayor stressed the need for continued road maintenance, saying better road conditions were important for supporting commercial activity, reducing delays and improving the safety and convenience of those using the route.
The Assembly has called on motorists and other road users to remain cautious, obey road traffic regulations and use the rehabilitated sections responsibly. It said such compliance would help protect the improvements and promote the safety of all road users.
Mr Allotey was accompanied during the inspection by the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Mr Douglas N.K. Annoful, and the Metropolitan Director of Finance, Mr Abeeku Amissah.
The affected sections were temporarily closed before the project began. The Assembly had announced the closure to enable critical repairs, including paving work intended to restore the road surface and improve its durability.
Completion of the project is expected to improve traffic movement around the Lava U-turn and the adjoining junctions. Those locations are important access points for commercial vehicles, traders and other people travelling within the CBD.
The road intervention forms part of wider efforts by the Assembly to address infrastructure challenges across the metropolis. The broader objective is to provide a safer, more accessible and orderly environment for businesses and the travelling public.
The Assembly said responsible use of the repaired route would be essential to maintaining the condition of the road and ensuring that the benefits of the work are sustained.
