Accra, Feb. 15, GNA – The vim and colour that characterised the celebration of Saint Valentine’s Day, in the previous years, especially in the capital, Accra, was missing this year, a night survey by the Ghana News Agency, has revealed on Monday.
A tour of some popular spots and streets in Accra on Monday evening showed that most entertainment spots recorded far less patronage while the streets were without the usual carnivals that previously served as tonic for the celebration.
The Osu Oxford Street, which is noted for street jams and carnivals during such occasion, was colourless, with many people going about their normal businesses as if it was just an ordinary day.
However, there were a dozen ladies on the streets, who although were not wearing red, wore mini skirts and tops that barely covered their body.
An elderly woman, who seemed unhappy about this mode of dressing, especially among girls, described it as “near nakedness”. “It is very shameful and reduces the dignity and respect of womanhood,” she told the become the norm in the Ghanaian society and advised clothes makers not to encourage the girls to walk on the street “half-naked in the name of fashion.”
“I appeal to dressmakers to take the moral values of society into account when designing their clothes. I believe they are in the best position to reverse this trend for future generation,” she added. She urged the youth to pursue programmes that could enhance their welfare, instead of engaging in licentiousness and other immoral acts on Valentine’s Day.
Other places visited were the La Pleasure Beach, ‘Next Door’ at Nungua, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Heavy’s Place at Awudome Estate and Jokers in La.
