Accra-Nsawam train shuttle service resumes

Accra, Jan. 8, GNA – The Ministry of Harbours and Railways and the Ghana Railway Company (GRC) Limited on Tuesday announced that the Accra-Nsawam train shuttle service, which was suspended due to the derailment of a locomotive and passenger coach, would resume full operation tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

It said engineers and technical personnel of the GRC had been working on Tuesday to re-rail the locomotive and passenger coach to enable the commuter rail service to resume.

A statement signed by Mr Ahmed Ayuba, Special Assistant to the Minister gave the assurance after the Minister, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi had visited the Achimota Railway Station to ascertain the level of damage caused by the derailment and efforts being made by the GRC workers to ensure the speedy resumption of commuter service on the Accra-Nsawam railway line.

Mr Alidu Saddique, Deputy Chief Engineer of the GRC told the Minister that the workers of the GRC used hydraulic jacks and cranes to re-rail the locomotive and the coach affected by the derailment.

Prof Ameyaw-Akumfi assured the workers of the GRC of efforts being made by the government to ensure the rehabilitation and expansion of the railway system in the country.
