Accra Mayor urges architects to contribute to assemblies’ development plan

Accra, Aug. 6, GNA – Architects have been asked to assist the assemblies in the formulation, implementation and maintenance of development programmes and make their expertise relevant to national development.

Mr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Chief Executive of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), made the appeal at the induction of 38 Architects in Accra.

He said that the AMA was determined to stop the menace of unplanned settlements in the metropolis in order to enhance people’s safety during the rainy season.

Mr Alban S.K. Bagbin, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, said that even though the induction of the architects had given them licence to practice, they would be expected to seek further knowledge so that that they could be abreast with international standards of their profession.

He said there was the need to celebrate the state and style of arts since Ghanaian architects were creative and commended for their services in other countries.

However, Mr Bagbin implored them to accept postings to the rural communities to complement government’s efforts to develop the remote areas in Ghana.

Professor Ralph Mills-Tettey, Registrar of Architects Registration Council, said they were the largest single entry unto the profession. He said architects should be master builders equipped with both theoretical and practical knowledge and must be able to design and supervise the erection of buildings.
