Accra, Oct. 25, GNA- Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu Kissiedu, Headmaster of the Accra High School on Saturday said lack of bungalows for tutors is hampering academic performance of the school.
Mr. Kissiedu said the school has only five bungalows for its 65 tutorial staff.
He said because the school is a day one, students and the teachers have to come from far places to attend classes.
He said teachers are compelled to carry home, work that they would have done on campus and this make their work more difficult.
Mr. Kissiedu however said that the students have to pass their exams with difficulties. He said 92 percent of the students who passed out from the school have qualified and gained admissions into the tertiary institutions in the country.
The Headmaster said this at the school’s Fun Games, which formed part of the school’s 80th Anniversary Celebrations in Accra.
The School, which was established in 1923, the first Secondary School in the then Eastern Province of the Gold Coast started as a private school and a boarding school was later converted into a public and day school.
It has a three block classrooms with a student population of 1,356. Mr. Kissiedu said the main purpose of the celebration was to expose the school to the public and also raise funds to put up bungalows and classrooms.
He said the Ghana Educational Fund (GETFUND) is the only source of funds for projects at the school and even the school has not received its share of the fund since it reopened.
Some of the schools and organisations invited to compete in the games included, Accra Academy Secondary School, Accra Girls’ Secondary School, British Council Ladies, Labone Secondary School, and the Old Students Association of Accra High School.
They participated in Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball Table Tennis and Tug of War.
Accra High School won the soccer tournament by beating the Accra Academy 4-2 on penalties. In the girls division, Accra High School lost the soccer to the British Council Ladies. Accra Academy won the boys basketball and table tennis. Accra Girls won the tug of war by beating the British Council Girls in two straight games. Accra High School girls also won the basketball while the Old Students beat their juniors in the boys Volleyball.
