According to the facts presented by the prosecution, Mr Maazi is one of six people allegedly belonging to a robbery syndicate. The group is accused of following people after they had carried out transactions at banks before attacking and robbing them.

The case also relates to a police operation in Labone on 13 August. Two suspects were shot dead by police after an exchange of gunfire, according to the prosecution’s account. Three other suspects remain at large.

The court’s decision means Mr Maazi will remain under police supervision while officers continue their investigations into the alleged activities of the group and the attacks in Tema, Spintex and Labone.

His lawyer had asked the court to grant bail, but the application was opposed by the prosecution. Prosecutors argued that releasing the accused could create a risk that he would leave the jurisdiction before the investigation was completed.

After considering the request, the judge declined to grant bail and ordered that Mr Maazi be held in police custody for two weeks. The accused will return to the Accra Circuit Court on 2 September, when the case is expected to come before the court again.

The charges are allegations at this stage, and Augustine Okechuku Maazi has denied them by pleading not guilty.
