Accra CBD Gets a Makeover: AMA Starts Clean-up and Decongestion Exercise today

To ensure making Greater Accra region a clean city and also meet the demands of commercial transport operators, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has begun a major decongestion exercise today, Tuesday, 20th May 2025.

The exercise focuses on areas around the AMA Head Office, including King Tackie Tawiah Statue, Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka.

AMA’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Gilbert Ankrah, speaking to the media today, Monday, 19th May, explained the scope of the operation, stating that the exercise would intensify along key routes from Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane.

“The plan is straightforward, with the main focus on the areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. All zones within that enclave will be addressed. Attention will also be given to the Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel areas,” he said.

However, before the operation began, AMA’s Chief Executive, Mr. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, engaged with street hawkers within the Central Business District (CBD), appealing for their cooperation and understanding.

“I am pleading with you to assist us in cleaning up the city and restoring order” he he pleaded.

We all want a better and more organized environment, and cooperation is vital in achieving that goal,” he pleaded.

This decongestion campaign forms part of a wider strategy aimed at restoring order and improving sanitation across the capital city.
