Accounting to Ghanaians not an abuse of incumbency – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has responded to critics who accuse him of abusing his incumbency by embarking on his ‘Accounting to the People Tour’ across the ten regions of Ghana.

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP), New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Convention People’s Party (CPP) have all accused President Mahama of abuse of incumbency.

According to the opposition parties, President Mahama is using state resources to campaign.

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has also indicated that the ‘Accounting to the People Tour’ could pass as an abuse of incumbency per some key indicators.

However, President John Dramani Mahama on his Facebook page debunked the claims and said he was only accounting to Ghanaians about government projects.

According to him, he has the obligation as President of the Republic to account to Ghanaians on what he has done within the last three years.

President John Dramani Mahama said, “I [President Mahama] have since 2013 focused on accountability and transparency. This is why I started the Accounting to the People tour. I chose this approach because it gives me the chance to focus on each and every region and to get direct feedback from all of you.”

All Ghanaians have the right to access information – it is a fundamental right, guaranteed by our Constitution. As President, I therefore have the obligation to inform all of you about my Government’s projects, their stage of execution and their purposes.

I have since 2013 focused on accountability and transparency. This is why I started the Accounting to the People tour. I chose this approach because it gives me the chance to focus on each and every region, and to get direct feedback from all of you.

Together we are building the 21st Century Ghana, and we all need to have a clear picture of what we have achieved so far, and what remains to be done.

Thank you all for your valuable insights and for your strong confidence in our common future. May God bless all of you!
