Accountant remanded for defrauding 41 persons

Accra, Jan. 20, GNA – An accountant, who allegedly collected over 300 million cedis from 41 persons under the pretext of recruiting them to the United Kingdom in order to work for a firm but failed to do so, on Thursday appeared at a Circuit Court in Accra charged with fraud. Dennis Silver Brown Akoto, who is also a businessman, pleaded not guilty.

The court remanded Brown into prison custody to reappear on February 2.

Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector Ben Darfour said Brown posed as someone who had just returned from abroad and was representing a non-existent British company known as Transworld Africa British Developing Company.

The Prosecutor said Brown convinced the complainants that the company needed some Ghanaians to work in the UK. The complainants undertook medical examination and Brown took from them monies between 200,000 cedis and 10 million cedis to process their documents.

Brown succeeded in collecting more than 300 million cedis but kept on postponing dates on which the complainants would be travelling. The complainants, therefore, reported the matter to the Police. When he was arrested, 128 Ghanaian passports without visas were found in Brown’s room.
