Accidents rate on Winneba-Kasoa road increasing

Winneba, Aug 22, GNA – The number of accidents and deaths recorded on the rehabilitated Winneba/Kasoa truck road between January and June 2004 increased from 41 to 59 for the same period in 2005.

Seventeen people were killed in 91 accidents in 2005 as against 10 people in 62 accidents between January and June 2004.

Mr Nicholas Gasu, the Winneba District Police Commander, told the He said 91 vehicles were involved in accidents in 2005 as against 62 in the 2004.

Mr Gasu attributed to the increasing accident rates to over speeding, wrongful overtaking and impatience on the part of drivers due to the good road.

He said the police have introduced measures to help reduce accidents on the road and these include constant patrols and mounting of snap roadblocks.

Mr Kofi Atta, the Chairman of the Winneba branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of Trades Union Congress (TUC), expressed concern about the increasing accidents on the Winneba-Kasoa-Accra road.

He said no vehicle from the union had been involved in accident over the past two years following measure put in place by the union.
