Kumasi, Oct 11, GNA-Mr Sumaila Boachie, Chairman of the Kumasi-Tarkwa-Ellubo branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has attributed one of the causes of road accidents in the country to the numerous potholes on the highways.
He has therefore appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) as a matter of urgency to fill all potholes on the highways to ensure safe driving.
Addressing a meeting of the branch union in Kumasi on Sunday, Mr Boachie advised drivers to park their vehicles during heavy downpour so as to avoid any mishaps.
He cautioned drivers who go on long journeys to park their vehicles when tired and have a little nap as to help avoid accidents.
Mr Boachie warned that any of its drivers caught drunk while driving would be sanctioned and may eventually lead to expulsion from the union.
Mr Kwaku Adusei, branch secretary, pleaded with the government to import spare parts at subsidised prices to the transport unions as their high cost tempted vehicle owners not to buy genuine parts and this often lead to total breakdown of vehicles.
He called on the drivers to promptly honour the payment of income tax so as to enable the government generate enough funds to maintain the roads.
