Aburi Girls Senior High School (ABUGISS), has joined the civil society campaign to reduce political tension as it organized a civic education festival to encourage the youth to reject violence.
“The role of the youth in enhancing peaceful elections in Ghana” was the theme chosen for the event.
The Deputy Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mrs. Josephine Nkrumah, who opened the festival, urged young people not to be part of any evil agenda by individuals or some political parties to cause confusion before, during or after the elections.
She said they should not do the politician’s bidding but focus on working hard to live their dream.
“Your future is in your hands, you must avoid making any mistakes that would destroy your lives.”
Mrs. Nkrumah reminded them that, they had critical roles to play to keep the nation calm, united and peaceful.
She called on them to talk everybody out of intolerance, reckless conduct and violence in their communities in the run-up to the elections.
Mr. Alex Sackey, the Eastern Regional NCCE Director, said the Commission was determined to do everything to empower the youth to show responsibility and conduct themselves well during the period.
He used the occasion to appeal to the churches and the mosques to preach peace. Students from three other senior high schools Adisadel College, Pope John and Presbyterian Boys also participated in the festival.
It provided the opportunity for them to interact and ask questions about the December 7 election.
