About 550 women screened for breast cancer at Atebubu

Atebubu (B/A), Nov.10, GNA – A 15-member medical team from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and Peace and Love Hospital, both in Kumasi last Friday offered a free screening in breast cancer for 550 women within the Atebubu-Amanten district. Dr. (Mrs.) B. Wiafe-Addai, a Specialist in Breast Pathology and Executive Director of the Peace and Love Hospital at Oduom in Kumasi led the team.

The exercise was jointly sponsored by the World Vision International, Atebubu-Amanten District Assembly and the Government District Hospital at Atebubu.

It was initiated by Madam Agnes Bekoe Asieduwaa, Chairperson of the Hospital Management Committee and Madam Mary Agyei, Director of Women’s Ministries of the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Atebubu which moblised 135 women for the exercise.

Dr. Prince Quarshie, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, advised the women to report changes in their breasts to the hospital for immediate treatment.

Nana Owusu Achiaw-Brempong II, Omanhene of Atebubu Traditional Area thanked the team and appealed for them to undertake such exercise periodically to relieve women in the area of breast cancer. Madam Asieduwaa said she was a beneficiary of a similar exercise organised by the team in Kumasi and negotiated for similar exercise for women within the Atebubu-Amanten district.

The Peace and Love Hospital and Breast Cancer International (BCI) an NGO based in Kumasi, was established to create breast cancer awareness among Ghanaian women.
