Abosso Goldfields embark on tree planting exercise

As part of activities marking the celebration of the World Environment Day, which felt on June 5, Abosso Goldfields Limited, Damang mine has embarked on the planting of tree seedlings at Damang in the Western Region.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Green economy: does it include you.”

The company with support from pupils, teachers and members of a charity environmental club, planted 200 tree seedlings at the Damang community clinic and along the road from Damang Railway crossing to Ntsiakokrom.

The staff of the company earlier on organized a clear-up exercise at the Damang market and the community center.

Speaking at the function, Mr. Augustine Asubonteng, acting General Manager of the company, Damang mine, said the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) defines green economy “as one that result in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.”

Mr. Robert Siaw, Head of Sustainable Development Affairs, Ghana, called on Ghanaians to keep their homes and surroundings clean and to ensure that their children adopted such practice.

He said this is the only practice the entire country can agree on, in keeping the environment clean from filth.

Mr. Siaw added that, the forest reserves are perishing due to infrastructure development, and encouraged all to replace every tree that is cut down to help the country regain its forest reservation.

The occasion was used to organize an environmental quiz competition and at the end of the contest Damang JHS emerged the winner with 29 points, Nana Amoakwa Model school placed second with 22 and Holy Child JHS obtained the third position with 19 points.**
