Koforidua, Aug 21, GNA- The people of Abompe in the Fanteakwa District on Tuesday appealed to the government to help them to develop the bauxite stone mining into a major economic activity. They also suggested the construction of a youth training centre in the area to train them on the uses of bauxite stone.
The spokesperson of the community, Mr Clement Asare Nkafu, who made the appeal during an exhibition at the ongoing national arts and cultural festival in Koforidua, said there were large deposits of bauxite stones stretching from Abompe to the Kwahu mountains. He explained that bauxite stones are used for making beads and other related products and it had been the livelihood of the people since time immemorial.
According to him, the bauxite mining was on the verge of collapse because the youth had refused to engage in it due to the risk involved and its tedious nature.
Mr Nkafu noted that though the bauxite mining had been the sole livelihood of the people it had no coordinating body to help in their activities. He said the bauxite stone mining project was a major business venture that could change the economic situation of the whole district and the nation at large, if innovative measures were put in place. The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs Akosua Takyiwa Adu who opened the exhibition stressed the importance of exposing the school children to the Ghanaian Arts and cultural. 21 Aug 07
