Abesim residents live in fear

Abesim (B/A), June 23, GNA – Some residents at Abesim, near Sunyani are living in fear following the release of a man with mental disorder from the psychiatric hospital.

The man, Kwame Awuah, who is in his mid 30s, slashed the throat of his nephew and attempted to bury the body at a farm near their house about four years ago when some neighbours alerted the police.

Before committing the crime, Awuah had also threatened to kill some of the residents on a number of occasions without any cause. He is said to have a history of mental disorder and was sent to the Ankaful Psychiatric hospital for medical attention. Awuah was on admission at the psychiatric hospital for more than a year. A resident told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on condition of anonymity that Awuah was recently discharged from the hospital and re-integrated to his family. He said his presence in the area posed a threat to the lives of all th= e people adding that 93everybody is afraid to confront his family over the issue”. The resident observed that Awuah on his return from the hospital appeared normal and well dressed, similar characteristics he exhibited before committing the murder. The resident therefore suggested that Awuah be sent back to the hospital before he 93commits something more horrific”.
