A downpour causes havoc in Gomoa West

Apam (C/R), July 8, GNA – A downpour which started from Tuesday night, July 7, claimed one life and caused massive destruction to property in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region. The worst affected communities are Apam, Mumford, Mprumem and Odumase.

The prompt response from the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah and a rescue team comprising the Police and personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service prevented further loss of lives.

The team had to use canoes to rescue victims at Apam. Three vehicles, which attempted to cross over the flooded Ankamo – Apam road were overturned leading to the loss of life of a man believed to be a citizen of Gomoa Enyeme. The other passengers who were trapped in the vehicle were rescued by the team.

Some of the victims who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Apam described the disaster as the worst in 50 years. More than 40 houses were submerged in the floods forcing the victims to pack their belongings to stay with friends and relatives. Speaking to the GNA after the rescue services, the DCE appealed to the Department of Town and Country Planning, to insist that the right procedure is followed before approving building permits. He urged the officials not to let money to influence them to allow people to put up structures in water ways, which had led to the current floods. 08 July 09
