A couple before court for causing harm

Accra, April 6, GNA – A couple, who allegedly poured hot water on a tenant, on Wednesday appeared before an Accra Circuit court for causing harm and disturbing public peace.

Abdul Mumuni, businessman, 38, and his wife Safuratu Abdul Mumuni, trader, 35, together fought with Awuratu Karim, also a trader and subjected her to severe beating and in the process poured boiling water on her causing bruises and burns on her body. Abdul and Safuratu pleaded not guilty to causing harm and disturbing public peace and were granted GH¢8,000 bail. Awuratu, who pleaded guilty for disturbing public peace and pleaded for leniency, was sentenced to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for 12 months or in default serve six months imprisonment in hard labour.

The case was adjourned to April 20. Police Inspector I.A.A. Ahor, prosecuting said Safuratu and Awuratu live in the same house at Mamobi in Accra and sometime in February this year, a misunderstanding ensued between them which resulted in a quarrel but they were separated. He said in the evening of the same day, when Abdul arrived at home and was informed of the fight between his wife and Awuratu he became offended and went to enquire from Awuratu why she fought with her wife during his absence.

This generated into insults and Abdul assaulted Awuratu and in the process pushed Awuratu into boiling water on a coal pot and she sustained burns.

A report was made to the police and Awuratu was issued with a medical form to attend hospital where she was treated and discharged. After investigations they were charged with the offence. 6 April 11
