A call for collaboration to protect forest resources

Mpasaso (Ash), Oct. 24, GNA – Mr Nelson Amelordzi, Nkawie District Forestry Manager, has called for closer collaboration between the Forestry Services Division (FSD) and communities to protect the forest and other natural resources in the country.

According to him, proper management and active participation of all stakeholders in the communities would enhance the protection of forest resources and prevent illegal timber operations, which deprived the government of revenue for development.

Mr Amelordzi was speaking at a stakeholders’ forum at Mpasaso in the Ahafo-Ano South district of Ashanti on Tuesday, He warned against illegal chainsaw operations in the area and said the FSD had intensified its efforts to arrest the culprits.

Mrs Mercy Asare, Deputy Ashanti Regional Manager of the Collaborative Forestry Management Unit of the FSD, urged timber contractors to show commitment towards the community’s social responsibility agreements to ensure peace and harmony with the people. Nana Anim Ababio, chief of Wioso, commended the FSD for involving the people in the management of forest resources in the country.
