Ho, March 18, GNA – Good care for voter identity cards rather than perceived lack of publicity and difficulty in locating replacement centres might be responsible for low response to the replacement exercise in the Volta region, officials said on Tuesday. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on perceived low patronage to the exercise, Ms Laurencia Kpatakpa, Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, said there was no reason for people to want to replace their cards when they have not lost them.
Ms Kpatakpa said every electoral area had between three and four replacement centres and that officials of the Commission were moving from location to location in a drive to reach as many people as possible.
Mr Eddie Ameh, a Replacement Officer, said many people treasured the cards and used them for several important transactions so they kept them very well.
About 50 people had so far called at the centres visited by the GNA in the Ho Municipality to replace their cards. Prominent among the reasons cited for the loss were theft, transfers and relocation. Some of those who lost their cards told the GNA that the vastness of their electoral areas made it difficult for them to easily locate the designated replacement centres.
