Tie nearly disrupted inauguration

Awutu, March 1, GNA. – The inauguration of the newly created Awutu Senya District Assembly was halted for about 20 minutes when two aspirants nearly came to a tie in the election of a Presiding Member for the Assembly.

Mr. Kwesi Esseku polled 17 votes and Mr Justice Esseku who had 16 votes insisted that since none of them had two-thirds majority, there should be re-election but after some persuasion, he stepped down for Mr Kwesi Esseku.

However, Mr Anthony Oppong, Effutu Awutu Senya Electoral Officer, who supervised the election called for a motion to grant the decision of Mr Justice Esseku.

But Mr. Justice Esseku stepped down and Mr Kwesi Esseku was declared the winner to preside over the 36- member assembly out of which 11 were government appointees.
