Traders barred from old Dawurampong market

Gomoa Dawurampong (C/R) Feb. 24, GNA-The Gomoa District Security Council and the District Assembly on Friday used armed policemen to force traders at Gomoa Dawurampong and its surrounding communities to go to the new market that had been constructed by the Assembly.

The traders have, before then refused to move to the new market which, they said, was too small and dangerous because of vehicular movement in the area and that it had not been fully completed. As early as 0400 hours on Friday armed policemen mobilized from Apam, Agona Swedru and Dawurampong took over the old market, where they directed traders and vehicles with foodstuff, wares and goods to the new market.

Most of the traders the GNA spoke to complained about lack of security, electricity and warehouse as some the services and facilities lacking at the new market, hence their unwillingness to go there. Some traders, including Madams Grace Soa, and Esi Kyerewa, said they were finding it difficulty to move to the new market because plantain, cassava, fish and salt sellers have no shelter, forcing them to stay all day long in the open space at the mercy of the weather. Most of the traders were also of the opinion that the Assembly should have liaised with the traditional authorities to perform some customary rites before moving traders to the new site.
