Woman arrested over baby’s death

Winneba (C/R) Feb. 22, GNA- Mercy Teiko, a 21-year-old mother, is helping the police in investigations into the drowning of her four-month old baby girl in a gutter in Winneba last Monday. The Winneba District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jordan Quaye, who confirmed the story to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Winneba on Friday, said Teiko had been granted police enquiry bail. ASP Quaye said on Monday February 18 this year, Teiko laid the baby, who was asleep, in front of a store close to a gutter, and went to fetch water. He said when the woman returned, she could not find the baby and informed the father, Mr. Francis Amoah, who accompanied her to the police station to report the case. ASP Quaye said while Mr Amoah and Teiko were at the police station, some neighbours who found the baby dead in the gutter, also went there to inform Teiko about the incident. He said the baby has seen been buried after autopsy at the Winneba Government Hospital. ASP Quaye said the women would be put before court for exposing the baby to danger to serve as deterrent to others.
