Minister rejects withdrawal of legal instruments

Accra, Feb. 22, GNA – Mr Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, Minister of Local Government, on Friday rejected a committee’s recommendation for the withdrawal of a legal instrument establishing the Biakoye District Assembly.

The Minister said withdrawal of the instrument would lead to confusion because there have been lots of agitation over the choice of the Nkonya Ahinkro as the district capital as against Worawora for the Biakoye District.

Mr. Adjei-Darko was reacting to a report of the Committee on Subsidiary Legislation on the creation of the over 70 new districts, municipalities and metropolis presented to Parliament by Mr Francis Agbotse, Chairman of the Committee.

Mr Agbotse, in presenting the committee’s report, had recommended that the instruments establishing the creation of Biakoye and Gomoa East districts assemblies be withdrawn for further consultations over the choices of district capitals but the Local Government Minister said he would only agree to withdraw that of Gomoa East and not Biakoye. With the refusal of the Local Government Minister to withdraw the legal instrument on Biakoye, the creation of Biakoye with its district capital as Nkonya Ahinko comes into existence after today (Friday) with the effluxion of time together with over 70 others such as the Ledzekuku-Krowor, Adenta and Ashiaman Municipal Assemblies.
