Kufuor leaves for Addis Ababa

Accra, Jan. 28, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor left Accra on Monday morning for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the 10th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union from Thursday January 31 to Saturday February 2.

He was accompanied by senior government officials. The summit, which is on the theme: “Industrial Development of Africa” would elect a new Chairman of the Union as well as consider the report of the Executive Council on the audit of the Union and that of the Ministerial Committee on Union Government.

A statement signed by Mr Andrew Awuni, President’s Spokesperson, said other issues that would be discussed were the appointment of Commissioners of the AU Commission and the adoption of the Budget for 2008.

It said the summit would also review the report on the Peace and Security Council and the security situation on the continent. The statement said ahead of the opening of the main summit, would be a meeting of five heads of state comprising the Presidents of Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, Gabon and Libya to deliberate on the road map for a union government.

From Ethiopia, President Kufuor will continue to Rome, Italy to attend the Annual General Meeting of the World Food Programme.
