Assembly urges Kofi Annan Centre to prepare development plan

Ajumako Afransi (C/R), Dec. 7, GNA- The Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District Assembly has tasked the management of the Kofi Annan Skills and Training Centre at Ajumako Afransi to prepare a five-year-development Plan, clearly stating its needs and priorities.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Kenneth Obempong said this at the inauguration of a workshop for the Centre at Ajumako Afransi in the Central Region.

The District Assembly built the Centre with support from the Ghana and Holland branches of the Kofi Annan Foundation at the cost 200 million Euros.

Mr Obempong said as a first step the Assembly is in contact with the Ministry of Mines and Energy to connect the school and the Afransi town to the National Electricity Grid. The DCE said the provision of electricity would greatly enhance teaching and learning and appealed to the Energy Minister and the Dutch Ambassador in Ghana to assist in the construction of staff quarters and dormitories.

The provision of these facilities would greatly improve the Center’s enrolment of students, adding that, the school, which started with 38 students in 2005, now has a population of 106, he said. Mr Obempong said the school caters for a big area and without a hostel it would be difficult for students from other villages to commute daily to school.

The DCE said it is the vision of the Assembly and all stakeholders to make the Centre a Regional institution, to train the youth to acquire skills of international standards.

He said achieving this objective would require a considerable amount of input in the form of infrastructure. He appealed to citizens of Afransi both home and abroad to support the development of the Centre, which is an investment that can change the fortunes of the town.
