Do not privatise revenue collection

Accra, Nov. 29, GNA.- Mr. Williams Mensah, General Secretary of the Local Government Workers Union (LGWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has appealed to government to stop various District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies from privatising revenue collection in respect of Property Rates.

He said, if privatisation is allowed, it would affect the jobs of permanent Staff who have worked for several years and that would also derail government efforts towards solving unemployment problems facing the country.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra, Mr Mensah said instead, the services of the Institute of Local Government Studies must be engaged to train and retrain the staff to upgrade their skills. Mr Mensah said the Union is ready to lend its support towards such training, adding, ” the staff would not be found wanting after going through capacity building courses”.
