Upper East Schools receive fortified rice

Sandema (U/E), Nov. 28, GNA – Some schools in the Upper East Region, especially those in areas that were affected by the recent floods, were given fortified rice by the School Feeding Programme Secretariat. The beneficiary schools are in Bongo, Sandema and the Garu-Tempane districts.

The fortified rice contained vitamins and would help reduce malnourishment of pupils. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview the Executive Director of the School Feeding Programme, Dr Amoako Tuffour, said City Hope, an organization based in the US and working in the area, gave the rice to the Rotary Club Ghana. Rotary Club Ghana also gave it to the School Feeding Programme Secretariat to be distributed to schools particularly the most deprived ones.

Dr Tuffour said the Upper West and the Northern regions would also benefit from the exercise and commended City Hope and the Rotary Club for supporting the secretariat.

He said the secretariat was prepared to partner with any organization that would want to assist it in its activities and appealed to other donor agencies and philanthropists to team up with the secretariat to fight poverty.
