LEGON WORKERS DEMONSTRATE AGAINST FARE HIKE

Accra, Jan.30, About 500 members of the Legon branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) today went on a four hour demonstration to back their demand for the withdrawal of the 40 per cent increase in transport fares by the GPRTU. The demonstrators, carrying placards some of which read, “GPRTU stop this nonsense,” “J.J.sit up,” and “Ghana is not lawless.” The demonstrators started from the University of Ghana campus through Tetteh Quarshie Circle, to Makola and converged at the TUC headquarters, where they presented a nine point resolution to Mr Christian Appiah Agyei, Secretary General. of the Trades Union Congress. He assured them that the matter had been referred to the GPRTU who are looking into it and said any decision would be conveyed to them as soon as possible. The GPRTU last week increased transport fares by 40 per cent, citing high operational costs as some of their reasons.
