Cobbler remanded for alleged rape

Sunyani, Oct. 19, GNA- A 22-year-old cobbler has been remanded into prison custody by a Sunyani Magistrates’ court for allegedly raping a sixteen year old girl and detaining her in his room over night in Sunyani.

Charles Amponsah, pleaded not guilty to the charge of raping and was ordered to re-appear before the court on October 22, 2007. Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Akwasi Amoako told the court presided by Mr. Albert Zoogah, that on October 6 this year, the victim was sent by the mother and on the way met Amponsah who informed her that the shop she has been sent to was closed and directed her to another shop near his (Amponsah) house.

He said the girl followed the accused person to the said shop but on reaching Amponsahh’s house he invited the girl to her room so that he could pick up an item before they proceed to the shop. The prosecutor said Amponsah quickly locked the door when the victim entered and started fondling her.

He said the girl struggled with the accused and bit him on the back to free herself but to no avail. He said Amponsah pushed the girl down, torn her pant into pieces before having an affair with her. The accused person after the act removed the door keys and detained the girl till the following morning around 0400 hours before releasing her to go home.

Asp Amoako said the girl told the mother about her ordeal, who reported the matter to the police. He said Amponsah was arrested and upon interrogation said the victim was her girlfriend and that it was the first time he had sex with her.
