Man, 26, drowns in Thursday’s rain at Tema

Tema, Oct. 07, GNA — The happy mood of three friends returning home after having fun in town turned sour when one of them, Mr. Richmond Nana Safo Asiedu got drowned in a big drain in front of his house at Tema Community nine during last Thursday night’s rain that lasted for about one hour.

Mr. Asiedu was said to be in the company of two other friends Mr Franklin Nyako and Mr Henry Renner when they were returning from town to their various homes in the same community and met his death. The body of the deceased was retrieved in a drain at Tema Community six on Sunday and has been deposited at the Tema General Hospital morgue. An eye witness told the Ghana News Agency on Sunday that the three young men who live in the same vicinity at the Community nine went to town to have fun and on their return, as it was raining so they parted company and rushed to their homes. However, as Richmond who was crossing the foot bridge over the gutter which was flooded in front of the house, he slipped and fell into it.

The eye witness said all attempts by the two friends to rescue him did not succeed, so they went to inform others and a search party was quickly organised to look for him. His body was traced to a big drain at Tema Community six on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Tema Community two police have confirmed the incident and said investigations were being conducted into the incident.

When contacted, Mr Abraham Reynolds Dennis, Tema Municipal Co-ordinator of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said the drain is a main drain that had been cemented. There is the need for the Department of Urban Roads to build a bridge over it and others in the communities to prevent such occurrences, he said.
