TEMA PORT RECORDS HIGHEST CARGO IN ’95

Tema, Jan 29, The Tema Port recorded the highest cargo throughput (cargo passing through the port) of about 4.5 million tons in1995 since the Port was built in 1961, Mr Unity Kumedzro, Director of the Port, has said. In a welcoming address at the 1994/95 best worker awards ceremony of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) at Tema, he said container traffic had also grown steadily from about 22,000 teus ( twenty feet equivalent units) per annum at the time of the merger in 1986 to over 102,000 teus in 1995. Mr Kumedzro said through the collective efforts of the Port workers, the ship turn round time of the port has consistently decreased from an average of 2.8 days in 1989 to about 1.7 days in 1995. The Port Director said the average labour productivity has increased nearly six fold from 13.6 tons per gang hour in 1988 to 78 tons in 1995, adding the productivity per man hour in 1995 is above five tons. “This indicates that on the average, each worker currently carries 80 bags of cocoa in one hour. It also tells the extent of goodwill, loyalty and commitment of our workforce, and the entire Port.
