Carpenter allegedly commits suicide for inability to re-pay loan

Koforidua, Sept. 26, GNA – Seth Kwame Kwakye, a 54-year-old carpenter allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday due to his inability to re-pay a 1,300 Ghana cedis (13 million cedis) loan he took to perform the funeral rites of his late mother last year.

An eyewitness account said Kwakye hanged himself with a nylon rope at the premises of his carpentry workshop at Nsukwao, a suburb of Koforidua.

Koforidua District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police John Naami who confirmed the story to GNA said he received a telephone call in the morning that a man had hanged himself at a carpentry shop.

DSP Naami said some police personnel who went to the scene saw the deceased in khaki shorts and a Lacoste shirt hanging from the ceiling of his workshop with a nylon rope. He said the police were informed that the deceased could not re-pay the loan and its accumulated interest totalling 3,500 (35 million cedis). DSP Naami said and the money lender instituted a civil action against the deceased and was ordered by the court to pay the money. Meanwhile the body has been deposited at the Koforidua Central Hospital morgue for autopsy.
