Accra, Sept. 24, GNA – Mr. Alan Kyerematen, aspiring flag bearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Monday filed his nomination documents 72 hours after the official opening of nominations by the party on Saturday, September 22.
In accordance with the party’s regulations, Mr Kyerematen, former Minister of Trade, Industry and President’s Special Initiative (PSI), paid 25,000 Ghana cedis (250 million cedis) as nomination fee. He also submitted an application letter in his own handwriting.
Flanked by his wife, Patricia and a large number of party supporters drawn from all the 230 constituencies, Mr Kyerematen stormed the party Headquarters amidst brass band music and dancing after hours of a carnival procession through some principal streets of Accra. Other notable political personalities included Mr Stephen Ntim, a leading member of the NPP and Ms Frances Esiam, former National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who defected to join the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP).
Mr. Kyerematen cited his efficiency, speed and progressive pacesetting posture in submitting the completed nomination forms within 72 hours and said, “This is a demonstration of a time conscious leadership. Procrastination will be a thing of the past under Alan Cash’s governance.”
He declared: “The battle for NPP retaining political power has just begun. Elections 2008 must be won on December 22 at the Special National Delegates’ Congress, with the election of Mr. Alan Kyerematen as the flag bearer.”
Nana Ohene Ntow, NPP General Secretary, who received the nomination forms, reiterated an appeal to the aspirants to desist from holding themselves out as though they had been elected as party’s representatives for Elections 2008.
“All aspirants must not present themselves nationally and internationally as representatives of the party until elected. The aspirants must desist from making any policy statement in the name of the party except where the policy statements are already adopted by the party,” Nana Ntow said.
“Party officers are to refrain from openly declaring the support of any branch, constituency or organ for any individual candidate or campaigning for them,” the General Secretary added. More than 10 aspirants have collected nomination forms since nomination opened on Saturday. Some 20 people have openly declared their intention to contest the primaries. 24 Sept. 07
