Driver fined for wrong parking

Asamankese (E/R), June 18, GNA – The Asamankese Circuit Court has warned drivers, who show gross disrespect to Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Guards.

The Judge, Mr S. S. Appiah gave the warning when he imposed a fine of 250,000 cedis on Kwabena Asante, a driver, for parking at a prohibited area and thereby blocking the free flow of traffic. Asante, who pleaded not guilty, will go to prison for three months in default.

He was remanded in custody to re-appear on June 20 on a charge of failing to produce a driving licence when demanded by the Police. He pleaded guilty but said he had a driving licence, which he had left in Accra.

Mr Appiah observed that drivers themselves established GPRTU to ensure discipline in the profession and deplored the attitude of those of them that fail to respect their guards by doing what pleased them.

He said indiscipline was a major cause of accidents on the roads and warned that if Asante failed to produce his licence at the adjourned date, he would be dealt with accordingly.

Prosecuting, Inspector Alhassan Amadu told the court that Asante parked his car at a filling station to pick up passengers on his way from Accra to Akwatia. When the GPRTU Guards confronted him, Asante ignored them and drove off. On his return from Akwatia, he was chased to Asuokaw and arrested.
