KNUST launches ‘Safe Transportation on Campus’

Kumasi, Aug 23, GNA – ‘Safe Transportation on Campus’, a project designed to regulate activities of commercial drivers on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has been launched in Kumasi.

The project was necessitated by recent armed robberies on campus that university authorities believe were facilitated by some commercial drivers.

Under the project, taxi drivers who intend operating on the campus would be given new identification numbers embossed on their vehicles whilst those without the embossment would be allowed entry into the university under special conditions.

The university would also allow hostel buses to shuttle students within the campus alongside KNUST’s designated buses. Launching the project on Wednesday Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, Vice-Chancellor of the KNUST, said urvan buses that plied communities surrounding the university would be allowed entry to their destinations.

He said the university had so far issued 37 taxi drivers with the new identification numbers and uniforms after screening them. They were given a two-week training workshop on road signs sponsored by the KNUST Transport Unit in collaboration with the State Transport Company (STC).

Prof Adarkwa appealed to drivers, students and staff of the university to comply with the new directives for the success of the project.
