Car Kills Ghanaian Woman in DC Area

… Critically Injures Infant
A two-month-old infant is in critical condition after a car struck and killed the baby’s mother as she and the little girl were crossing Route 197 near Bowie Town Center (Washington DC Area) Thursday night.

The mother, identified as 22-year-old Floret Kusi-Davies, may have gotten caught in the rain while she was out shopping and decided to rush home about 8:30 p.m. Her daughter Zionna was strapped to her in an infant carrier.

Police say Kusi-Davies was not in a crosswalk when she was hit. Family and friends say it was a route she took often to reach her home just feet away.

“I guess this one time she just got unlucky on her way back which is unfortunate,” said her brother, Tommy Kusi-Davies.

The driver of the car stayed on the scene. Police say neither speed nor alcohol played a role in the crash. Investigators say the driver will not face any charges.

Family and neighbors say there are only two crosswalks across Route 197, linking the neighborhood with the busy shopping center, leading many people to dart across traffic. They think more crosswalks could save lives.

“They just need to do something; it’s just tragic that you have to lose somebody, you know, for something to be done but it’s a shame,” said Kusi-Davies cousin, Monigo Alami.

A woman is dead and an infant is reported in critical condition after being struck by a car across from Bowie Town Center.
