Stop abusing the rights of Students- Asante Union

Accra, July 21, GNA- The Asante Students’ Union on Saturday expressed concern about the rate at which the human rights of students were being abused in recent times.

The Association noted with concern how students in various institutions suffered in the hands of the police, school authorities and others who by virtue of their positions maltreated innocent students for no apparent reason.

“What is more disturbing to us as students is the fact that government shows no concern about these and in general, the interest of students these days,” the Union stated in a release to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

The statement signed by the Union’s National President, Eric Sarpong and two other executives said students often see government officials display some concern immediately the issues break out, but remain “relaxed for the matter to die with time unresolved”. “The country risks suffering so many consequences in future if the inhuman treatment of students continue in our various institutions. “These future leaders might demonstrate the wickedness they are experiencing today one day,” it said.

The release however cautioned students against radicalism and that they should not stand against authorities or misbehave. It also called on people in ‘high offices’ to be considerate in matters affecting students to avoid the tendency of taking the law into their own hands.
