Charkitey’s family wants release of report on his death

Accra, July 10, GNA – The family of the driver at the centre of a motor accident on the Accra-Tema Motorway in 2000 involving the convoy of former President Jerry Rawlings is calling on the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to release the report on its investigations on what caused his death in police custody.

Mr I.K. Charkitey, a family spokesperson, has sent a letter to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Joe Ghartey, asking for his intervention for the report on the death of Mr. Daniel Dautey Chakitey to be released.

He said CHRAJ started its investigations in January 2001 into the death of the driver but had yet to release the report.

“I therefore crave your indulgence, Hon. Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, to intervene at your earliest convenient time to relieve the family of the pain inflicted on them,” Mr Charkitey said. Mr Daniel Charkitey, who was driving a Nissan Urvan bus on the Accra-Tema Motorway on October 29, 2000, was said to have caused the accident that led to the death of some of the Former President’s guards. He was arrested on November 5, 2000 and placed in police custody before his death on December 8, 2000.
