ISD intensifies education on the new Ghana cedi in Kwabre district

Mamponteng (Ash), June 20, GNA- The Information Services Department (ISD) has embarked on a five-day sensitisation exercise on the re-denomination of the cedi in the Kwabre district. The exercise involved interaction with the people on the new currency, its intrinsic features, nature of the notes and coins and the conversion of the old currency to the new ones.

Over 15 communities including Ntonso, Kodie, Ntiribuoho, Aduman, Wawase, Brofoyedru, Ankaase, Atimatim, Ahwiaa, Maase, Heman, Aduamoa, Fawoade and Sasa would be covered.

Interacting with the people in the various communities, Mr Dickson Adjouma, District Information Officer for Asante-Akim North, told the people that the old currency would be used alongside the new ones up to the end of December when the old would cease to be legal tender. He said after the deadline, people who still have some of the old currency could decide to either go to any commercial bank to change it or open new accounts with it.

Mr Adjouma urged the people to be wary of fraudsters and fake currency dealers who would come to them with the intention of creating problems for them during the change over. He said traders do not need to change their monies into new currencies before they start business since both old and new would be in circulation concurrently for six months.

Mr Francis Mensah, Kwabre District Information Officer, advised the people to handle the nation’s currency with care especially the new ones so that the Bank of Ghana does not spend more money replacing it. 20 June 07
