UTAG condemns threat on vice chancellor

Accra, June 20, GNA – The University of Ghana branch of University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG) on Wednesday condemned threats on the Vice Chancellor, Professor Clifford Tagoe and his family and called for support and protection for him and the university administration.

A statement signed in Accra by Dr John Ofosu-Anim, President of the University of Ghana branch of UTAG, said it had learnt with “great concern” the vandalisation of the vehicle of the Vice Chancellor’s wife. “Our association deplores the attempt by any individual or groups of people to intimidate the Vice-Chancellor and his family,” UTAG said. “We members of UTAG support the Vice-Chancellor, the administration and the policies being pursued to make the University of Ghana a better place of learning,” it added.

UTAG called on the public, particularly the security services, to give the Vice-Chancellor and the entire university administration the needed support and protection to execute their duties. Unidentified people issued threats against the Vice-Chancellor and lecturers at the end of last semester because of the University’s new residential policy that allows only first year students to have residential accommodation.

One student and a former student were arrested by the police in connection with the threats and police say they are still investigating
