Accra, April 13, GNA – The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) on Thursday appealed to the National Media Commission (NMC) to reconsider the criteria for selecting chief executives for the state-owned media as contained in its advertisement in the media.
A statement by the association and signed by its president, Mrs Gifty Affenyi-Dadzie, said the appeal followed complaints from GJA members over the criteria for selecting chief executives for the Ghana News Agency, Graphic Communications and New Times Corporation.
The GJA expressed concern over the inability of the NMC to make provision for high calibre professional media personnel without any first degree but have other recognised professional media qualifications.
“It is on record that most media personnel who rose through the ranks to top executive positions, have proved themselves creditably”, the statement said, and wondered why the NMC was so restrictive in its mode of selection.
“The GJA hopes the NMC would act quickly to resolve this anomaly to bring fairness into its selection mechanism. Practitioners with qualitative professional and managerial experience should be considered on merit”, the statement said.
