Rainstorm destroys boats, affects telephone communication in Winneba

Winneba (C/R), May 26, GNA – An hour long rainstorm that hit Winneba and its surroundings on Monday morning badly damaged four boats belonging to a number of local fishermen beyond repairs and caused extensive damage to 10 others.

The rainstorm also affected telephone communication in an around Winneba for four days.

A number of buildings in the town also had their roofs rip-off, Neenyi Kweku Mbri, Apofohene of Winneba told the Ghana News Agency at Winneba on Tuesday.

According to him the storm raged between 10:00 hours and 11:00 hours, followed by a heavy rainfall, which destroyed the boats that had been anchored on the sea as was normally done by the fishermen. Neenyi Mbri said the rainstorm knocked the canoes against each other on the sea, damaging 14 of them and appealed to the District Assembly to come to the aid the affected fishermen and their dependants. The storm also ripped-off the roofs of some buildings at the Mary and Ghanney Streets in the town and destroyed food crops in backyard gardens.

A top official from the Ghana Telecom at Winneba in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Thursday said the rainstorm damaged some equipment at the antenna Poles at Afransi and Winneba, breaking telephone communication between, Monday May 21 and Thursday May, 24 2007.
