NADMO strapped of support from assembly

Drobo (B/A), May 17, GNA- The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Jaman South district of the Brong Ahafo Region, says its inability to compensate disaster victims in cash or in kind was due to inadequate support from the district assembly. Mr. Simon Badu Yeboah, District Co-ordinator, who was addressing an ordinary meeting of the assembly in Drobo, said for past two years the district office had not received any financial assistance from the assembly to help provide relief items to the 260 disaster victims of various kinds.

He said in the early part of 2005 the assembly gave 14.5 million cedis to the organization out of the 20 million cedis requested, but since then it had refused to offer further support. In reaction, Mr. Apraku Tanor, District Chief Executive, explained that “the assembly is only to render some level of assistance and said NADMO should be aware that the assembly’s resources cannot cater for all its needs”.

He expressed his concern about the refusal of the Jaman branch of NADMO to account for funds provided by their headquarters. Later in an interview with the GNA, Mr. Oppong Kyei, District NADMO officer in charge of disaster management said, rainstorms, landslides and domestic fires caused most disasters in the area.

He said the 260 victims within the past two years have been suffering since their properties worth millions of cedis were destroyed, adding that, a recent rainstorm at Babianeha also displaced 33 residents and caused damage to property estimated at 360 million cedis. Mr. Gabriel Kofi Kyeremeh, Presiding Member, urged the assembly to increase its support to NADMO.
